Apple Health and recovery data

Apple Health is the door most runs on iPhone already pass through. Connect it and lope reads your runs from there, whatever recorded them. Opt in, and it also reads a small set of recovery metrics so the coach can see how you're absorbing training, not only what you did.

Runs

Any app or watch that writes workouts to Apple Health feeds lope: Apple Watch, including the runs you send to it from today's plan, and third-party apps that save to Health. New runs sync automatically; there's no button to press. Each one goes through the same per-run analysis and classification as a run from any other source, and the coach reacts to it the same way.

Recovery data

This part is opt-in and separate from runs. If you turn it on, lope reads seven kinds of recovery data from Health:

  • Sleep, with stages where your device records them
  • Resting heart rate
  • Heart rate variability (HRV)
  • VO2max as estimated by your device
  • Respiratory rate
  • Wrist temperature
  • Heart rate recovery after exercise

Baselines, not thresholds. None of these numbers mean much on their own. A resting heart rate of 52 is high for some runners and low for others. So lope compares each metric with your own 30-day baseline and tells the coach how far today sits from it.

That's what the coach reads: a short summary of where you are against your baseline, alongside your runs and today's plan. It's one input into what today is for, not an automatic rule that cancels workouts.

Which of these you have depends on your watch. Oura and Whoop, for example, write to Health, so their recovery metrics can reach lope this way. If a metric doesn't appear, your device may not record it.

Permissions and revoking them

Apple Health asks for permission one data type at a time, and you can allow runs without allowing any recovery data. lope asks for the recovery types only when you opt in. You can change any of these later in the Health app under Sharing, or in lope under You.

Separately, there's a switch for whether the coach gets this data at all. Your Health runs and heart rate are sent to the coach only if you allow it; lope asks when you first open the app, and you can change it any time in You → Coaching. With it off, lope still shows you your runs, and the coach works from what's left.

If recovery data isn't showing up, the usual cause is a permission that was declined for that one type. Check the per-type list in Health before anything else.

What lope writes

One thing: runs you record in lope, saved to Health when the run ends, if you allowed it. lope never writes recovery data, never edits runs from other apps, and never deletes anything in Health.

Where it goes and where it doesn't

Health data is used for coaching and for nothing else. It's never used for marketing and never sent to Customer.io, the service lope uses for product email. The coach, which runs on Claude by Anthropic, sees it only when the consent switch above is on, and Anthropic doesn't train on it. The full picture is in Your data.

Disconnecting and deleting

Disconnect Apple Health

New runs stop syncing. You can choose to delete the runs lope imported from Health, or keep them.

Opt out of recovery data

Turn it off and lope deletes the recovery data it holds. It's also deleted when you delete your account.

Delete your account

In the app, under You → Account. Everything lope holds goes, Health data included. Or email support@lopeapp.com.
